Do you or a loved one suffer from an eating disorder and addiction?
People with eating disorders often abuse alcohol, prescription and recreational drugs to numb themselves emotionally, to escape fear and and the grip of depression and to help them lose weight.
Eating disorders are classified as a group of serious eating problems and/or obsessions whereby you are so preoccupied with food and weight that you can often focus on little else. Helping someone with an eating disorder is not easy as the eating disorder creates a severe mental block and is difficult to treat. Unlike other eating disorder treatment centers, Dr. Willa lives on site for more intense eating disorder treatment program.
According to Answers.com (Great Video's), "Disorders characterized by abnormal eating behaviors and beliefs about eating, weight, and shape. The three major diagnoses are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder".
Anorexia Nervosa (Also called anorexia.) - an eating disorder in which people intentionally starve themselves. It causes extreme weight loss, which the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), defines as at least 15 percent below the individual's normal body weight.
Bulimia Nervosa - an eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors. The most common form is defensive vomiting (also called purging), fasting, the use of laxatives, enemas, diuretics, and over exercising are also common.
Binge Eating Disorder - an eating disorder that resembles bulimia nervosa and is characterized by episodes of uncontrolled eating (or bingeing). It differs from bulimia, however, because its sufferers do not purge their bodies of the excess food, via vomiting, laxative abuse, or diuretic abuse.
Did you know there are many variations of abnormal eating?
It's true and they may have only some of the features required for an eating disorder diagnosis; these cases are classified as eating disorders not otherwise specified. Obesity is classified as a general medical condition and not as an eating disorder (a psychiatric condition) because it is not consistently associated with psychological or behavioral problems.
Other abnormal eating disorders include: Compulsive Overeating, Rumination Syndrome, Diabulimia, Food Maintenance Syndrome, Female Athlete Triad, EDNOS, Pica, Orthorexia, Night Eating Syndrome, Nocturnal Sleep Related Eating Disorder and Hyperphagia.
Regardless of type, eating disorders can cause serious mental and physical problems, and at their most severe, if not properly treated can even be life-threatening. Most people with eating disorders are females, but males can also have eating disorders. An exception is binge-eating disorder, which appears to affect almost as many men as women.
Dr. Willa's House can seriously treat eating disorders patients!
Like dual diagnosis, many addiction treatment facilities will not accept or treat drug addicts or alcoholics that also suffer from an eating disorder problem.
